About this deal

I've just borrowed Pure Effect, Absolute Magic and related volume, The Mental Mysteries of Hector Chadwick (numbered 1st ed), from a friend. Richardson's book, which has caused a fair amount of deserved excitement in professional circles of both conjurors and mentalists alike, raised some interesting implications in this direction, at least to more attentive readers; the book suggests that the author is not so much a mentalist as he is a doer of mysteries, be they feats of believable if extremely skilled mental dexterity, unusual conjuring prowess, or more traditional paranormal demonstrations. If they are going to all that trouble to produce fake illegal copies, one wonders why they didn't do it with the first edition that apparently everyone (not me) is after? Burger, who has now been writing publicly on magic for some 18 years or thereabouts, have now taken hold on a new generation of magicians. I had Derren sign my copy the other week,he said and hoped I didn't pay to much for it, as far as iam aware the first editions were self produced , mine is a 3rd edition and is a hard backed copy, even if it is legit would you pay that for it, I know its a great book but.

Brown frankly appears to attach little importance—but is in fact a theatrical question, and that the traditional effects and approaches of mentalism, by their very nature, have too long lived their meager lives out somewhere between the desert towns of Dullsville and Endoftheline. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Which is a pity, because if you know Derren's work outside of his TV specials, he is an extraordinarily talented card magician. Together we will bring this bright goodness to the surface and polish it until it shimmers and dances, beckons and seduces. I NEVER expect to be reading the actual truth about this or any other "career" decision made by an entertainer. The Magic Cafe Forum Index » » Penny for your thoughts » » Derren Brown – Pure Effect Spiral Bound Second Edition ? This trick was published in the 1st edition of the Derren Brown book ‘Pure Effect’ but was later removed as it was thought the effect was too strong. So when he published his own book ('Tricks of the Mind') for the general public, with a view to publishing more as well, he knew that large numbers of lay folk would try and track down any previous works. Tommy Wonder presents us with similar demands in his landmark Books of Wonder, and responds to his similarly self-imposed challenges with exquisite combinations of mechanics, manipulation, and psychology, achieving a kind of magic that is dearly conjuring, and yet effects that seem beyond "mere" conjuring.

Now Derren Brown tosses subtle implications aside and lays down a challenge—make that multiple challenges—to traditionalists, even as he takes a running leap forward into the future of magic. We have a dog-eared version of The Royal Road to Card Magic, Principles and Deceptions (with original leather cover), the Tarbell Set (soon to get on CD – tough to dog-ear a CD), Expert at the Card Table, Claudine the Circus Woman (we wrote it so we feel it is special), Bobo’s Coin Magic, and The Lindsay Lohan Illustrated History – Volume II.

I also remember he makes several (quite sexist) jokes about women, seemingly to stress that he is straight, throughout. Or, in the books, does Derren discuss some of his current techniques used and he doesn't want the public to reflect on the material in the book and now know that his current stage persona is "explainable" by a thorough reading of the material in those books? They seem like they're very hard to find and probably expensive so I'm after some opinions before investing time and money into finding these books. Brown is more given to a mentalist's approach—and yet he eschews that label and, from the work described in these pages, that label clearly falls somewhere between inadequate and inappropriate. Prior to the release of pure effect, and indeed for a while onwards, Derren had not come out as gay.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Both Pure Effect and Absolute Magic have been around for the six or so years that he's been on TV and he's never worried about 'explanations' for his conjuring being out there. Brown offers in an early discussion of "My Aims and Priorities:" "Enough magicians have asked me about the wisdom of combining magic and mind-reading in performance. If you're interested in using some skills that Derren Brown does, I would also recommend checking out some NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) books, as they will definitely help you out. I know it confused the hell out of me when I first read it, and it's only after I've read a whole bunch of books on theory that I'm beginning to appreciate the points he makes. Also, one should not discount the fact that Derren Brown thinks it's very funny to stir up trouble occasionally. As the author comments, "I have also grown suspicious of the value of brief tricks, whereby a selected card may be transposed to the box, or be found by spelling to it. Getting something totally free is likely to get a true MoneySaver's heart pumping faster than any cardio workout ever could. In Bob Cassidy’s work, including his extraordinary Mental Miracles DVD, he argues that we should avoid the typical “card trick” or the use of cards to in your own mental miracle.

The author's fundamental position is that conventional definitions of—and barriers between—magic and mentalism are in fact stodgy old constructs that exist only in the confines of the traditions of magic, and have no bearing on the actual potential of magical performance. Derren holds his arm in the same way, when Derren drops his arm, the particpants arm drops at the same time. Once again the effect reaches another level when he invites another spectator to the stage and the volunteer miraculasly reads the mind of the hypnotised subject accuratley. The two effects left out were indeed 'Remin-something' (can't spell it) and also 'lift', which is were you control someone else's arm and the second your's lifts up so does theres. However I haven't read his other books, but I mean it has his kind of humour and style from what I know of him. Below we list the branches disappearing and what the alternatives are if you still want face-to-face banking. It is a very entertaining book just to read, it has great insights into presentation and performance, and some pretty advanced tricks. He doesn't realize at the time that the material is in fact some of the most powerful material EVER to make it into print for mentalists. Let us together suppress our communal gag reflex and reach far below these vile grotesquerie: and feel for the scatologist's (sic) true treasure: the shimmering gold that is the purification of all that stinks and smears: a glittering alchemical prize that screams to all those with ears to hear: No one cares about your sealed predictions!
