Improvisation is an enigmatic and elusive thing, especially at the envelope-pushing level captured here, with Miles and sidemen forging ahead and abandoning the strictures of hard bop for the relative freedom of a modal approach.

From that moment on, the record never really changes pace -- each tune has a similar relaxed feel, as the music flows easily. If there was ever an album awaiting a high-fidelity, custom-pressed vinyl treatment of the level you now hold in your hands, it is Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. This 1959 all-time classic is one of the monuments of jazz: So What; Freddie Freeloader; Blue in Green; All Blues , and Flamenco Sketches . In late 1958, after some eight months, Bill Evans – the only white member of Miles’ group – left the lineup and was replaced by Wynton Kelly. If I had any one complaint, it’s that the bass lacks a little definition, it’s a little boomy, if that makes sense.Only a handful of albums come close to this one, but they still haven’t knocked it from its pinnacle of pure pleasure and excellence. In its three-decade-plus history, Mobile Fidelity has never been prouder to have the honor of handling efforts as important as Davis' key recordings.
