About this deal

The powerful force for making changes, leveling up and simply getting stuff done that is ACCOUNTABILITY. Over the years I’ve come to learn that asking for help is a bit of an art form, in that it takes a lot of practice to start becoming comfortable with it. At some point fear would set in and the adrenaline would get me going and I would start work furiously. Apparently it distracts the part of our brain that is most likely to wander, so we can really focus and get what we need to done. Although this is not the same visual distinction as in Things 3, Todoist colour codes my tasks based on the priority set.

The idea is that for five minutes, you do nothing but ask for support and for help - to the point that it becomes almost embarrassing. With the exception of using the Calm app to meditate for 10 minutes, I don’t use my phone for the first 2–3 hours of any day. Not only would I have had a complete lack of progress because the things ‘ve done wouldn’t have been possible. Break them into the tiniest things you can do, and give yourself the grace and patience you need to get through them! When you love what you do, it’s far less of a struggle to focus than it is when you hate what you do.

Sometimes bigger is better, and for many the statement could not be more true when it comes to the A5 GSD notebook. Even better, if it suits, tell a whole bunch of people that stand to benefit from you getting your thing done. Most things we have to get done really do come with a hard deadline, if they don’t then there’s an argument as to whether they are important and really need doing at all?

I find it helpful going to YouTube and finding some kind of epic motivational video can help as well.Choosing something and doing it breaks you out of the feeling of overwhelm and helps you gain momentum. This is the business equivalent of telling that one friend who is perpetually late that you are meeting at 7pm when really you are meeting at 8pm in the hope they actually arrive on time. These systems are important because they will save you time looking for things, but they also will help you get started much faster when you sit down to do your work. You need to give yourself time to pause, do something else for a while, have some fun and make it all worth it.

Deep work is the idea of really focusing on one thing, and giving yourself an hour or more to really focus without any distractions. It’s maybe no surprise, then, that my workload usually hovers somewhere between teeming to overflowing at all times.
