About this deal

She briefly pokes fun at the bromance, and goes on to say that the decrease in military participation has robbed men of the ability to have close physical relationships with other men.

The cultural perception of what a best friend was, and how many one should have, varied across countries. I started off really not liking it and almost put it down, I just thought it came from a really privileged perspective and that wasn’t acknowledged enough - like addiction is a huge illness and saying your addicted to friendship is taking the piss a bit! Misschien omdat ik precies het tegenovergestelde ben maar girly je kan gewoon nee zeggen tegen mensen en grenzen stellen? So if you are still, as Day was at one point, determined to maintain every friendly connection you’ve ever had, it is an index not of your niceness but of your desperate need to hang on to several skips’ worth of emotional lumber. I felt it as a symbolic gesture that marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new one, that is now forever imprinted in my memory, heart and soul. For some reason, probably to do with your own fear of abandonment, you carry on going through the motions with what Day dubs “White Wine Wednesdays”. I bought this knowing Elizabeth Day from her podcasts—How to Fail and Best Friend Therapy, co-hosted with her best friend Emma Reed Turrell—and thought this would be a bright, breezy, insightful, witty and uplifting book that would leave me with a smile on my face, but probably wouldn’t register very highly on the Richter scale of Important Works of Psychology. AND THEN she referenced Anne of Green Gables which was the icing on the cake for me as that character means such a lot to me.

Intertwined within the book are the "Friendship Tapes," various interviews with other people about their feelings in friendships.

On this document (you could have it laminated) you would list what you can and can’t offer a new person in your life. That gives you some idea of the sheer breadth of subject matter Day covers in the book, but it cannot convey the astonishing depth and insight of her writing, the sheer beauty of her prose, the elegance with which she expresses her passion for the subject. Well, Day sets about redressing this imbalance with a vengeance, interspersing powerful and insightful chapters on various aspects of friendship—personified by her relationships with particular individuals—with short passages written by a variety of interesting, and often marginalised, people. Sinto que está uma boa tradução, mas acho que teria apreciado mais a leitura no seu original, uma vez que a autora é britânica e é muito difícil fazer transparecer esse tipo de humor na nossa língua.
