About this deal

The current ‘LOOK INSIDE’ facility above shows a glimpse including the CONTENTS with the 13 titles/topics at the front, following a MAP (Martin Brown) of ‘Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly’.

Welcome to Halfman, Halfbook for my stop on the Blog Tour for The Draw Of The Sea by Wyl Menmuir and published by Aurum. The waves were like steam trains at full tilt, the white smoke of their chimneys whipping back as they powered towards the land.

On board a traditional Cornish gig boat, I met a crew of women who take out their frustrations by ploughing through the sea off St Michael’s Mount, and near St Ives I swam with a group of men who have what I can only describe as the nicest of self-help groups, floating in dark waters in the early hours on the north coast.

I miss and long for the sea when I am not near it and Wyl Menmuir has so beautifully captured that sentiment. Wyl Menmuir is a Cornish based author whose 2016 debut novel, The Many, was longlisted for the Man-Booker Award. He talks to fishermen, beachcombers, surfers and other locals about living their lives by the tides, and explores his own personal emotional connection to the water. The sea’s great indifference was a comfort in a way I can’t easily explain and it continues to play its part.Wyl Menmuir’s The Draw of the Sea is a beautifully written and deeply moving portrait of the sea and the people whose livelihoods revolve around it, examining the ephemeral but universal pull the sea holds over the human imagination. There's the page turners I can't put down, that I race through cause I just wanna know what comes next. While, as Menmuir says, “the term wreckers brings to mind false lights and ships lured on to the rocks”, there is little evidence that wrecking was ever this nefarious. Where you often drift off, not because it's not engaging but because they make your mind wander, and remember, and dream and I don't really know where I'm going with this. Each project starts with a few basic outlines and progresses into a finished tonal drawing; a final coloured version shows you how to develop your drawing even further.
